Garage Door Spring Repair and Replacement

Never attempt to repair garage door springs unless you are experienced and have help. This can be dangerous and requires special equipment. If you aren't convinced and want to do it yourself make sure you have a helper. A spring breaking is loud. If you hear a loud bang in or around the garage its probably a broken spring. When opening or closing the garage door, its also possible to have a broken garage door spring. The loud bang always gives it away. Garage door spring repairs can be a tricky and dangerous operation if you don't know what you are doing. There are extremely powerful springs that counter balance the weight of the a garage door. If you have a 300lb garage door you should have 300lb of spring tension. If you have a 100lb garage door you should have 100lb of spring tension. This is the force you may be dealing with so please be careful. If the opener is straining to open the door, it may be a broken spring. If the door cocks to one side when you try to open it, it may be a broken spring. Even if your garage door opens your putting great stain on the garage door opener and may burn it out over time.

The springs on your garage door can pose a safety hazard. A garage door spring that breaks or shatters can send sharp shrapnel flying in any direction of the garage. Anyone inside the garage if that happens to hit is at serious risk of injury or death. New garage door spring over the last 15 years or so have steel rods inside the center of the garage door spring to help from exploding outward or flying through your roof as well as safety hooks to keep the spring on the hardware.

Modern roll up garage door styles or also known as sectional garage doors pose little risk in the event of spring breakage or shattering. These kinds of springs are installed over a shaft that helps roll the door up to the open position. The shaft also acts as a retainer so that broken springs are not allowed to go ballistic.

If your old garage door springs do not include any such rod, it's best to replace them by call us at 323-225-2898 and schedule an appointment. But replacing springs can cost upwards of $120 or more depending on size of spring . There is a simple way to make old springs as safe as new ones with some 1/8 inch cable but it‘s safer just to replace them. If you wish to keep your old spring here’s one way to do it. ( Caution ) do not place your face or hands over or near the garage door springs when performing any repair or add on cable devices if a garage door spring brakes it can cause injury or death.

Close the garage door to extend the springs to their maximum position ( this step is to take measurements only do not work on the garage door in the closed position ), and measure the length. Double it and add at least one feet. For example, a spring, when extended measures 4.5 feet. Doubled is 9 feet, and add 1 feet for a total of 10 feet. You will need 1 feet of cable for each spring plus two cable clamps per spring to your shopping list. Thread the cable up the center of the spring, and back down outside the spring, forming a loop. Then use the cable clamps to clamp the ends together through the chain at the bottom of your wood jamb. Simple enough, you've just made a retainer to keep the spring safe should the spring shatter. This work is to be performed with the garage door in the open position.

If your door uses two springs on each side, add another foot (12 feet) to the length, and run the cable up the center of one spring, and down the center of the other - there, you just cut the cost of this project in half, and your garage is much safer. This work is to be performed with the garage door in the open position.

Your best bet is to just replace the springs with modern self-retaining ones. You can always call us a professional garage door company to replace springs and make the adjustments to your garage door and garage door opener it’s a lot safer and doesn’t cost too much and you know the jobs done right. Adjustments to the garage door might also be necessary, since the new springs will have different tension. Your garage door opener might not perform as well without adjustments

Broken Garage Door Springs

Garage door springs for a one piece garage door, or a sectional garage door, on average last 6 to 12 years. (Broken garage door springs) are caused by a verity of factors. When pouring the steel to make the wire for the springs all air bubbles may not escape causing the garage door spring wire to fault at a later date under pressure. When heat treating the garage door spring wire, the wire as it cools if there is any inconsistence in its cooling can cause a fault under pressure over time. Garage door springs when they break if they’re older the 5 years of age should all be replaced. Why? Because it is cheaper and more cost effective to replace the other springs then to pay for a second service call within a short period of time of the next spring breaking. Broken Sectional garage door springs on average take between 30 minutes and 90 minutes depending on if there is one spring or two springs the repair costs of broken sectional garage door springs with labor are between $ 145.00 to $ 285.00 Broken one piece garage door springs will range in price including labor $ 105.00 to 275.00 for standard garage door springs.
